Job Description
Job description- Mate of Towing Job Description Supervises, coordinates and participates in daily activities of crew aboard vessel. Is required to hold license issued by U.S. Coast Guard. Essential Functions: Directs activities and assist crew engaged in rigging towlines to barges or ship to be towed Operates, supervises or assists in operation of all vessel equipment Routinely inspects towing gear and lifesaving equipment, and orders parts and assist crew to repair or replace defective equipment Assumes command of vessel in the event Captain becomes incapacitated or is off duty Safe operation of vessel, upon request of Captain to push or pull, transit to destination, berth and unberth vessels, avoiding reefs, outlying shoals and other hazards Stands watch during specified periods, and determines geographical position of vessel upon request of Captain Utilizes navigational devices, such as compass and sextant and aids to navigation such as lighthouses and buoys Supervises and assists crew in cleaning and painting of vessel Familiar with JSEA procedures and documentation Other duties as assigned License Requirements: (Disclaimer, all licensures are subject to vessel and manning requirements) MMC, Merchant Marine Credentials 500 Gross Tons or more, Ocean’s, Near Coastal, Mate of Towing VSO, Vessel Security Officer, preferred Radar unlimited GMDSS, preferred Z-Drive/Tractor Tug experience preferred Job Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of SMS & HSSEQ maritime practices Computer, organizational and communications skills Ability to work well under pressure & manage crew members Strong attention to detailexcellent written and oral communication skills Performance and results driven Excellent decision-making and problem solving skills Able to work individually and as part of a team Ability to work after hours and on weekends as necessary Must have valid TWIC and U.S. Passport Ability to handle multiple projects and details simultaneously Physical Demands: Travel time is required for in-harbor, offshore, and other SMC divisional ports Close living quarters aboard the vessel alongside and underway for long periods of time This job operates both in a professional office environment when needed and primarily on vessels The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential function of this job While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.
