(3) Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the University of Hawai‘i Marine Center (UHMC), located at Pier 35 in Honolulu Harbor, Oahu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws. HOURLY RATE: $25.68/Hr. DUTIES: This is a seagoing position aboard oceanographic research vessels operated by the University of Hawai‘i Marine Center (UHMC). Operates and maintains deck machinery, cranes, winches, boats and other shipboard equipment, repair, sanitation, and upkeep of material, equipment, and areas in the deck department. Performs watch-standing duties for navigation, operations, and security purposes, conducts preventative maintenance work on the vessel, and serves as a socially responsible member of the ship’s crew providing a cooperative and safe working environment for the embarked scientific personnel and research project objectives. Operates hand tools and other equipment to perform routine maintenance work such as chipping, scrapping, painting, priming and/or cleaning of the ship’s hull, decks, interior spaces, boats, emergency and damage control gear, deck tackle, small boat and launch repair. Able-Bodied Mariners (ABs) are members of the shipboard Deck Department and perform duties assigned by the Ship’s Master and Chief Mate. Employee will work on a rotational schedule based on operational needs (e.g., 3/4 months on, 3/4 months off). PRIMARY QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION: High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent (At least four (4) years of maritime experience may substitute for a High School Diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.). EXPERIENCE: At least one (1) year of related experience in a seagoing shipboard position suitable for qualification as a licensed AB. KNOWLEDGE: Practical knowledge of seamanship and safe operation of heavy machinery and other equipment in shipboard setting; tools, techniques, and materials for effective preventative maintenance of ship’s steelwork and machinery; and standards required for safe and effective watch-keeping aboard vessels. ABILITIES & SKILLS: Must be a U.S. Citizen and possess a valid U.S. passport (minimum six (6) months prior to renewal). Must possess a current Merchant Mariners Certificate (MMC) as AB-Unlimited with endorsement for Rating Forming Part of a Navigational Watch (RFPNW), and a current U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) medical certificate. Must possess required Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping (STCW) documentation and valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) (minimum six (6) months prior to renewal). All documentation must be maintained in valid status throughout duration of employment. Post Offer/Employment Condition: Must be able to pass USCG Physical Exam for Merchant Mariners. Submit to and pass drug tests as mandated by the USCG including but not limited to pre-employment, random, post-accident testing. Medical and physical fitness must be adequate for working continuously at sea for up to four (0-4) months, and outdoors in tropical conditions for daily four to eight (4-8) hour shifts. Able to lift and carry up to fifty (50) pounds unassisted and able to meet all physical demands while performing the tasks required.
