Job Description

ATB Second Mate

Reports to: 
The Second Mate reports to the vessel Captain.
Supervises:

The Mate supervises the Deck Department at the Captain’s direction.
Description of Duties: 

Essential Duties (E):
General Duties and Responsibilities. 

E Familiarity with and adherence to all McAllister’s policies, procedures and Quality Safety Management System. 

Ensuring safe and efficient operations of the vessel.
 
Project a positive company image to customers, other mariners, terminal personnel and the public.
 
Provide appropriate instruction and supervision of personnel as directed by the Master.
 
Operational Responsibilities
 
Safe navigation and watch standing during operation of vessel as directed. 
 Keeping chart corrections current.
 Submitting vessel and barge ballast water reports when applicable.
 Supervising deck crew members during vessel maneuvers as directed.
 Participating in barge loading and discharging; acting as PIC, as required.
 Keeping the wheelhouse orderly and free from distracters.
 
Assisting the Master in ensuring that all vessel-related logs and paperwork are properly completed, submitted and maintained as required.
 
Monitoring and submitting vessel-deck consumable inventories and stores; overseeing the receipt, storage and recording of vessel stores and freight.
 
Equipment Responsibilities
 
Monitoring and/or performing maintenance tasks on the vessel and barge under the direction of the Master or Mate.

Safety/Regulatory Responsibilities

E Reviewing and maintaining vessel and barge documentation and certificates, notifying the appropriate shore-side personnel of any deficiencies.
 
Performs assigned firefighting, man overboard and abandon ship duties as assigned on the Station Bill.
 
Comply with and enforcing Company safety procedures and work rules, including the proper wearing of PPE.
 
Conduct drills, safety meetings, and vessel inspections under the direction of the Master.
 
Other duties as may be assigned by the Master.
