Job Description
Job Summary The 3rd Mate supports the Chief Mate in his duties to ensure vessel, marine, navigational, safety and emergency systems are functional and in apparent good working order. Principal Duties and Responsibilities Reports directly to the Chief Mate. Operates within the company’s core values and in accordance with the Code of Conduct. Complies with the Valaris Management System (VMS), policies, procedures, and relevant regulatory requirements. Understand and follow company QHSE policies and other programs. When directed to stand or assist with navigational watches, to navigate the vessel safely, ensuring adherence to company policies, regulations, and marine practices. Assist in maintaining vessel integrity, compliance with pollution regulations, and vessel stability. Assists Chief Mate in his duties related to the maintenance of marine, navigational, safety and emergency systems and appliances and documenting accuracy and completion of related tasks. Assists Chief Mate and Deck Foreman to inspect and maintain lifting gear. Performs inspections and routine checks to ensure materials and equipment loaded onboard are safely stowed, secured, and labeled according to regulatory requirements. Supervises or engages in paint/corrosion control preventive maintenance work. Maintain operational awareness and support the Chief Mate in planning Marine and cargo operations to support the overall operational goal. Assists with cargo operations, including standing an independent watch of bulk transfers and overseeing ABs and OSs. Perform assigned Preventative and Corrective Maintenance tasks on Marine deck equipment. Performs emergency duties and responsibilities as stated on the Station Bill and vessel specific Emergency Response Manual. Report incidents, hazards, or abnormal situations to supervisors and actively execute work in accordance with Company Safety Processes. Attend all required Safety and Operational meetings and participate fully in the annual performance appraisal process. Complete company training requirements for the 3rd Mate position. Promote good working relationships with other departments, mentor crew members, and provide leadership and motivation to marine crews. Assist with running hydrophones, and subsea beacons, and utilize the onboard DP simulator for training purposes. Gain knowledge, experience, and DP time and work toward obtaining a Nautical Institute Unlimited DP Operator certificate. Qualifications / Experience Valid National Third Mate of Self-Propelled Vessels of Unlimited Tonnage Upon Ocean license. Officer in Charge of Navigational Watch License STCW 95 II/1 endorsement. Able to qualify for or holds a Flag State endorsement. Valid Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats (PSCRB) STCW VI/2 endorsement. One year of experience as a 3rd Mate, or graduate from relevant trade school, university, or Maritime Academy. Fluent English communication skills. Completion of all training and certification requirements for 3rd Mate as described in the training matrix. Capable of performing emergency procedures including evacuations, fire drills, and other emergencies. Possesses good conflict resolution skills, interpersonal skills, communication skills, excellent teamwork and organizational skills.
